The second quarter of the 19th century witnessed an increased interest for the Dark Ages. One of the most original testimonies of this sudden passion lies in the creation of a multitude of small objects coming from all aspects of the everyday life (toilet, lighting, sewing, etc.). Made in bronze, they were also adorned with ogival arcatures, gothic aliasing and pinnacles. They were then sheened, glazed and given a golden tint with made them look semi-precious, just like this Mirror carrier. Fond of these “trinkets”, the upper middle class buys them in curiosity shops such as Le Petit Dunkerque or La Maison Giroux.
