Over the course of his career, Julio González returned repeatedly to self-portraits. The earlier pastel is a testament to his ability to turn his hand to more traditional art forms, while the later work is more dramatic and immediate, emphasising the intimacy between subject and viewer. “These images are striking by the intensity of their expression, the resolution writ on the face of a man who doesn’t drop his guard, but continues on his path, that of the solitary artist.” The variety of the techniques used by González (pastel work, engraving, sketching) reveal a skill set that bridges artistic genres.
