PASSION JAPAN, FROM NETSUKE TO MANGA

PASSION JAPAN, FROM NETSUKE TO MANGAS exhibition

As part of the Normandie Impressionniste Festival, the Musée de la Céramique in Rouen is staging an exhibition entitled "Passion Japon, from netsuke to manga", devoted to Japanese culture from the mid-19th century to the present day.
From 15 June to 22 September 2024, you'll have the chance to discover the evolution of Japanese art over the last three centuries.

Set at a child's level and aimed at all ages, the tour retraces the history of the collection of Japanese objects in three key areas. The first room evokes the atmosphere of an Asian art dealer's shop in the second half of the 19th century, where enthusiasts admired ceramics, prints and netsuke.

A second room illustrates a new period in the collection of Japanese art, from the early 20th century to the 1960s. As Europeans travelled to Japan more and more, they brought back a host of objects produced by Japanese craftsmen for this new tourist clientele (dolls, fans, lacquerware). In this room, a child- and family-friendly area has been set up in the style of a room in a traditional Japanese home.

Finally, the third room is devoted to the collection of Japanese art from the 1970s to the present day. This period was marked by an unprecedented infatuation with Japan and its culture, both ancient and contemporary. Here, visitors can discover Japanese pop culture objects such as manga, figurines, video games and posters.
