LE TEMPS DES COLLECTIONS V

Presentation of Le Temps des collections

25 November 2016 - 21 May 2017

Founded in 2012 at the Rouen Musée des Beaux-Arts, Le Temps des collections launched a new way of presenting permanent collections. Designers, researchers and leading figures have succeeded each other for four seasons, drawing on our archives to put together around forty previously unseen exhibitions on more than 500 works.

In this fifth year of the initiative, surprises definitely await with no less than eight new projects. This year, however, following in the footsteps of Christian Lacroix, Olivia Putman, Laure Adler and Agnès Jaoui, it is visitors themselves who are being entrusted with the keys to our works.

The only initiative of its kind within France, La chambre des visiteurs (The visitors’ room) enables visitors to choose the works that they want to discover. How? By voting in order to determine which of the more than fifty artists and seventy works will be exhibited in a room dedicated specifically to this project.
Until 31 October 2016, you can cast your vote at the Musée des Beaux-Arts or online at the website www.lachambredesvisiteurs.fr.

NUMEROUS PROJECTS TO DISCOVER AT THE MUSEUM!

CARAVAGGIO, THE FLAGELLATION OF ROUEN: A PAINTING IN ITS MUSEUM. An “echo chamber” starting from Caravaggio by G. Careri, paintings and drawings enables visitors to rediscover one of the museum’s key works: The Flagellation of Christ by Caravaggio.

HENRY III: PORTRAIT OF A REIGN IN CHIAROSCURO. The museum recently acquired a late-sixteenth-century portrait of Henry III of France, which depicts the monarch with the blue ribbon of the Order of the Holy Spirit. To mark this significant acquisition, the museum is honouring the last of the Valois kings.

DECEPTIVE APPEARANCES: François Jouvenet’s work emulating an etching whose glass has been broken, grouped together with a significant collection of trompe-l’œil paintings, humorously invites viewers to reflect on the power of illusion in images.

JEAN-FRANCIS AUBURTIN: DREAMS OF ARCADIA. To mark the gift of three Auburtin paintings and six watercolours and drawings from the artist’s heirs, the museum shall pay tribute to this unfairly underrated master.

A FAMILY OF AMATEURS: An exhibition of works discovered and chosen by four generations of collectors. This remarkable collection is proof of a curiosity that spans various fields.

A FAIR BALANCE: In 2016, the Musée Le Secq des Tournelles received a large gift of 91 weighing and measurement instruments. This collection offers a comprehensive overview of the history of these objects, from Antiquity to the present day.

HISTORY OF FRAMES: Nowadays, frames go unnoticed… This exhibition offers a fresh look at works by focusing on the frame for the first time.

THE COLUMN CAPITALS OF BOSCHERVILLE: The Museum of Antiquities has received a gift of two priceless Roman column capitals from the cloister of the Saint-Georges Abbey of Boscherville. These will complement the museum’s collection, which includes the famous column capital depicting musicians.

BEYOND THE WALLS: “Apothecary jars”. Following three exhibitions marking the “Beyond the Walls” operation, the Flaubert and History of Medicine Museum has already benefited this year and is looking at the area of pharmaceutical earthenware with a loan from the Museum of Ceramics.
